| Letter from the Executive Director |
| Our can-do spirit is what gives us the ability to overcome challenges that may seem impossible. For the Will Steger Foundation, this spirit is what compels us to take a stand in the face of a crisis and right now there is a global warming crisis brewing over the future of our planet. Global warming isn’t just affecting the Arctic; it is affecting all of us – from changes to our natural resources, to affects on wildlife and human communities, to weather patterns we no longer recognize. Addressing global warming provides a unique opportunity to balance our commitment to protect the environment and create new jobs. There is no denying global warming is a threat we have to face. That is why we are organizing local communities, educators and youth, meeting with state agency staff and our elected officials to promote renewable energy and initiating dialogues and critical discussions with friends and supporters.
Now is the time to contribute, especially in these tough financial times. We’re relying on you. Please donate to support the Will Steger Foundation now. Even a monthly contribution of $10/month goes a long way to sustain our programming. You can also support us by purchasing a green gift of a Global Warming 101 tote bag. Check out our new online store – 100% of the purchase price supports our work!
Now is the time for us to summon our can-do spirit and face this crisis, confident that we have strength and the resources to overcome another new challenge.
For those of you who have already given, your generosity is much appreciated!
Nicole Rom, Executive Director

2008 Ellesmere Island team member Toby Thorleifsson recently completed his post-expedition lecture tour in Norway. All told, Toby reached Norway’s 19 counties and reached over 19,500 students! Elements of the lecture tour featured the current climate crisis and the role international cooperation plays in solutions, from partnerships between nonprofits like the Will Steger Foundation to schools, government and institutions in Norway. Toby will continue to partner with WSF on youth engagement in 2009 – through his position at the Norwegian Ministry of Environment and specifically with the December 2009 international climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meet for the last time before the Kyoto Protocol’s expiration in Copenhagen a year from now. The goal of this conference is to produce a Copenhagen Protocol to slow global warming and to prevent catastrophic climate changes with concrete targets for 2020. Stay tuned for information about the Will Steger Foundation’s next project - Expedition: Copenhagen in the coming year.

| YEA! MN Celebrates 1 year anniversary
S tudents on the YEA! MN (Young Environmental Activists! Minnesota) steering committee hosted a fabulous anniversary party at Como High School in St Paul, Saturday December 13th, with over 25 students present from eight Twin Cities high schools. The event featured speaker Karen Monahan from Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM), who gave a presentation on the growing green jobs movement and encouraged students to reach out to disadvantaged communities and engage more students of color. The event ended on a high note with a great deal of pride in what YEA! MN has accomplished over the course of the year. Visit YEA! MN on facebook, YouTube and at www.yeamn.org.
WSF hosts Midwest Students at REAMP Annual Meeting
Will Steger Foundation Education Program Manager, Abby Fenton, has been hard at work supporting the development of a Midwest youth climate coalition. This December, in partnership with the Sierra Student Coalition, WSF helped host 15 college students who are active across the Midwest join the RE-AMP Annual Meeting (www.reamp.org) in Ames, IA, December 9-10. The meeting provided an opportunity for young climate leaders to bridge generations and build valuable partnerships with the network of non-profit organizations and foundations that RE-AMP supports. It also provided an opportunity for further community building within the coalition. Represented in the coalition are students from six Midwestern states, and staff from the Sierra Student Coalition, Global Exchange, the Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition, and the Student Environmental Action Coalition.

Tell President-elect Obama to make clean energy a top priority by signing the Repower, Refuel, Rebuild America pledge:
With a new president on the horizon, we have a renewed opportunity to take our country's energy economy in a bold new direction that will confront the climate challenge with the clean energy technologies and jobs that will also protect and restore the natural world we leave to our children.
Please sign the petition to President-elect Obama, urging him to take the decisive action needed during his first 100 days in office to usher in America's clean energy economy at NRDC’s action center.
