This Earth Day, I joined over seven hundred people in the Minnesota state capitol building rotunda to voice support for renewable energy legislation.
This has been a fantastic year for the YEA! MN steering committee! Not only did our students excel in statewide organizing by bringing over 100 youth to the Youth March for Climate Action Now, and over 70 youth to our Lobby Day in the winter, they also found time to organize more locally in their schools and communities.
The Will Steger Foundation’s YEA! MN program played a significant role at the Minnesota State Capitol on Earth Day this year as part of the Clean Energy and Jobs Campaign Day of Action. YEA! MN student leaders turned out 100 high school students in the rain and for the Young People's March for Climate Action Now, an event planned and facilitated entirely by youth in coordination with the campaign. YEA! MN Co-Chairs shared compelling testimony to the crowd of 700 people - half of whom were youth.
It was truly an honor to see Kim Wasserman, Founder and Executive of Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO), awarded the 2013 Goldman Environmental Prize for North America for her work organizing communities of color and coalitions against powerful coal interests.
I’m Katie Mercer-Taylor. I’m a student at Roseville Area High School and Co-chair of the Youth Environmental Activists of Minnesota. I'm very proud to see so many members of our strong and growing youth environmental movement here today. We come from many different communities and backgrounds, but we stand united today because our generation’s future depends on continuing the transition to renewable energy right now.
