Will Steger with Dr. Naomi Oreskes, Keynote Speaker,
Summer Institute for Climate Change Education, August 2010
Every August since 2006, the Will Steger Foundation (WSF) has hosted our flagship education program: Summer Institute on Climate Change Education. Unfortunately, our ability to operate this program in 2011 is now in jeopardy as a result of the state government shutdown. We’d like to offer you the chance to do something important for the 100 dedicated educators across Minnesota that have already registered to attend this year’s Institute, and are eager to lead the very type of change WSF was founded to bring about.
In short, we need to raise $30,000 in five weeks to successfully operate this program, and we’re delighted that a generous donor has stepped up with $7,500 to get us started. Your contribution allows us to offer our exceptional flagship program.
More about the 2011 Summer Institute on Climate Change Education
This year’s Institute will introduce our new curriculum and online classroom, Minnesota’s Changing Climate. Participating educators will be attending free of charge and are provided overnight accommodations and mileage reimbursement. They will also receive a free copy of our newest interdisciplinary, standards-based curriculum and ongoing classroom support from WSF staff throughout the year.
The Summer Institute is partially funded via a grant from the Minnesota State Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, which in turn derives its proceeds from the Minnesota State Lottery. As a result of the shutdown, their reimbursements to us will be delayed several months. This, coupled with a slight downturn in 2011 donation revenue, leads us to make this appeal today.
