Will Steger's Arctic Spacesuit
April 1, explorer Will Steger leaves for a seventy-day sub-Arctic expedition to Ellesmere Island in Canada. He won't forget to pack his Wild Things high-altitude one-piece.
"This is how I survive in the Arctic, where teh temperature can range from -55 to 20 Fahrenheit," says Steger. "I wear it whenever I'm outside the tent."
- Constructed with Event-brand textile, a breathable waterproof fabric.
- Front zipper goes underneath the suit to make it easier to go to the bathroom in subzero temps. "If you drop your drawers in severe weather you will get hypothermia."
- Neoprene cuffs pull over mukluks to seal out snow.
- Wolverine ruff is detachable. "We don't want to trap any more animals than we have to, and wolverine fur is teh only fur that doesn't entrap frost.
- Chest pockets have reach-across zippers, easy to manipulate while wearing heavy mittens.
- Chest zippers run backward to zip up, and pockets are recessed to prevent dropping equipment on the ice. "I carry a folded map, a compass, sharp knife, and GPS in my front pockets. It's essential to keep your gear simple."
- Full zipper down each side for ventilation to prevent overheating.
