Policy Work

Written by  Will Steger Foundation

“ Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising average sea level.” – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Climate Change 2007: Synthesis Report

Focusing on the movement to slow global warming, we work with elected officials at the state, regional, national and international level to create sound energy policies. We support state campaigns such as H.I.R.E. (Healthcare, Infrastructure and Renewable Energy) Minnesota, Clean Energy Minnesota, national cam- paigns such as 1sky and 350.org. We also work with our allies and partners to support biofuel investment and solar energy for Minnesota, clean car standards, and investment in green jobs.

OVERARCHING GOAL:
WSF’s overarching goal in its policy efforts is to form consensus and alignment among key constituencies to enable policy changes in the U.S. that will enable global agreements, creating energy solutions and con- servation strategies to avoid the worst consequences of global warming.

STRATEGIC GOAL 1:Serve as an eyewitness account of the consequences of a warming world in the Arctic and Antarctic, building public pressure on policy makers for urgent action con- sistent with the science.
STRATEGIC GOAL 2:Provide context, guidance and structure for youth cli- mate activists to effectively articulate policy solutions that match the science.
STRATEGIC GOAL 3:Use access to engage and attract business circles, in Midwest politics and internationally to reach new constituencies and hard-to-engage voices in pushing for policy response.
STRATEGIC GOAL 4:Build awareness that science is sufficiently clear to justifying strong and urgent action on policies geared toward: building a new energy economy strong enough to lift the US and world out of recession; end- ing reliance on oil; stopping new investment in coal without any carbon solution; stabilizing the CO2 in the atmosphere at 350ppm (below current levels); cut- ting emissions in the U.S. by 30-40% from 2005 levels by 2020 and 80% or more by 2050.
STRATEGIC GOAL 5:Push President Obama to engage world leaders includ- ing China and India to commit to solutions commen- surate with the problem, and press for U.S. action that is not contingent upon action by other countries.
