350.org: Established by author and environmentalist Bill McKibben, 350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that science and justice demand. Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet. Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

1sky: 1Sky was created in 2007 to focus the power of millions of concerned Americans on a single goal: bold federal action by 2010 that can stem global warming. The 1Sky Solutions are grounded in scientific necessity—they are the bottom line of what's needed to dramatically reduce carbon emissions while maximizing energy efficiency, renewable energy and breakthrough technologies. They also represent significant economic promise. By pivoting to a clean energy economy, we can relieve our dependence on foreign oil, unlock the potential of sustainable industry and usher in a new era of prosperity and green jobs. The 1Sky campaign is founded on a principle of nationwide inclusion. Our sole purpose is to unite, build, and catalyze the climate change movement behind a set of solutions that hold the promise of rapidly reducing carbon emissions while jumpstarting a green energy economy.

Indigenous Environmental Network: Established in 1990 within the United States, IEN was formed by grassroots Indigenous peoples and individuals to address environmental and economic justice issues (EJ). IEN's activities include building the capacity of Indigenous communities and tribal governments to develop mechanisms to protect our sacred sites, land, water, air, natural resources, health of both our people and all living things, and to build economically sustainable communities.

Sierra Student Coalition: The Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is a broad network of high school and college-aged youth from across the country working to protect the environment. The SSC is the youth-led chapter of the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization.

Climate Counts: Climate Counts is a non-profit campaign that scores companies annually on the basis of their voluntary action to reverse climate change. The Climate Counts Company Scorecard -- launched in June 2007 -- helps people vote with their dollars by making climate-conscious purchasing and investing choices that put pressure on the world's most well-known companies to take the issue of climate change seriously. Launched by organics pioneer Stonyfield Farm, Climate Counts believes everyday consumers can be the most important activists in the fight against global warming. Climate Counts has currently evaluated nearly 150 companies in sixteen major consumer sectors with plans to expand the number of companies and sectors. Climate Counts' work has appeared in many of the world's leading media outlets, among them the New York Times, National Public Radio, The Economist, BBC World Service, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, The Huffington Post, and the Harvard Business Review. The organization will launch its iPhone app later this year and its Climate Counts Industry Innovators (I2) program in early 2010.

What does the Midwest have to do with Copenhagen, and more specifically national and international climate policy?

The Midwest is rich in natural resources, biodiversity and agriculture production in addition to containing one of the largest freshwater sources in the world, the Great Lakes. However with climate change, the possibilities of crop failure and invasive species could be devastating for the country’s food and water supply.

While the Midwest holds significant resources, it is a large contributor to the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions, which result in global warming. The Midwest is a heavy polluter, particularly in the power sector since the predominant source of energy comes from coal-fired power. In 2005, it was determined that if the Midwest were a country (with the addition of states such as Indiana and Ohio), the Midwest would be the 4th largest C02 contributor, after the US, China and Russia!

On the other hand, the Midwest has enormous renewable energy potential, from cutting-edge wind technology, to rich biomass resources, to huge solar energy opportunities. With its excellent wind and solar capacity and first-rate research universities, the Midwest has the resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its agriculture and manufacturing sectors. By investing in these resources, the Midwest can stimulate investment in cleaner and more efficient energy technologies and grow its economy.

Believing that the Midwest is a key player in driving national climate policy, public opinion, and the renewable energy revolution, the Will Steger Foundation is committed to engaging young emerging leaders across the Midwest in national climate policy and the international climate negotiations. We have selected twelve dynamic youth leaders representing diverse communities from each of the following Midwest states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

  • Who? Will Steger and twelve Midwest youth, ages 20-26
  • What? Expedition Copenhagen Their mission: To make young people's voices heard at the international climate negotiations

Invite a member of the expedition team to your school this fall!

Expedition Copenhagen: a climate change education opportunity for students grades 6-12! Use adventure learning to engage your students in real world climate solutions. Free presentations available to schools throughout the Upper Midwest this fall.

Follow along with polar explorer Will Steger as he and a group of Midwest youth, ages 20-26, embark on Expedition Copenhagen, a mission to bring the youth voice to the international climate negotiations in December. The Midwest delegates are conducting educational outreach to junior and high school classrooms in the following states: Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin in Fall 2009. Presentations will cover the basics of climate change, the importance of youth engagement in climate change solutions, and how students can participate in the Expedition before and during the negotiations. Delegates will provide educators with information on the Will Steger Foundation’s new Citizen Climate curriculum, a set of interdisciplinary standards-based lessons on global climate solutions, The lessons cover the carbon cycle, target levels for atmospheric levels of greenhouse gasses, cap and trade, carbon tax, new technologies, concerns of developed and developing countries, and how to formulate position statements which if submitted to the expedition team, will be delivered in Copenhagen. If you are interested in having an Expedition team member visit your school, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Presentations will take place between September – November 2009.
