The Northern Lights phenomenon, or Aurora borealis, is a beautiful and uncommon occurrence in the Arctic. It is caused by charged particles in the atmosphere that are shaped by the special magnetic forces found near the North Pole. The phenomenon also occurs over Antarctica, where it is called the Aurora australis.
