The day broke cold and breezy over our little campsite on Basswood Lake. But by 9am the temperature had risen to 9 degrees above zero and the sun was beginning to shine through the clouds. By 10am, the day was sparkling. The snow that had fallen overnight carpeted the lake making everything new again.
The morning started out at a good clip. The dogs woke us up at 6:30am with their customary morning howl. Right on time! We ate our breakfast, packed our bags, and were ready to go by 8:45. Our technology, however, was not quite so motivated. We worked tediously for the next hour trying to set up wireless Internet access. Jim gave a howl himself when we finally made the connection we needed. We broke camp and were on our way.
The main goal for the day was to give our dogs a good run. The cold night had frozen most of the slush on the lakes and travel conditions were ideal. Following the U.S./Canadian border route provided us with a series of big lakes dotted with small islands, with no portages to slow us down. Our dogs were free to run their hearts out for the next 5 hours and 15 miles.
Abby and Elizabeth took turns skiing in front of the first sled, creating a trail for the dogs to follow. Mushers, Matt and Nancy, emphasized discipline and obedience. Lead dogs had an opportunity to practice their lefts, rights, and ‘tighten-outs”. Team dogs had a chance to practice their patience as following behind a skier when conditions are fast, requiring a lot of stopping and starting.
It was a perfect day for travel. We all felt grateful for the opportunity to train in such a beautiful place.
