dancing_polar_bears3.jpgAlthough it was quite cold for the Saturday expedition kick-off at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, the day before was unseasonably warm. Temperatures on Friday, January 26 reached 41°F (5°C). All of the large ice sculptures collapsed, including the ice sculpture of the Global Warming 101 Expedition logo.

The ice-sculpture logo was carved for us by award-winning ice sculptor Buzz Saw Bob. The days of work that went into creating the large ice sculptures were wasted. Piles of ice rubble were all that remained when the Saturday crowds arrived. The smaller ice sculptures and the snow sculptures, however, survived the warm Friday and still look fantastic. A beautiful ice sculpture of two “dancing” polar bears also survived. Even so, we couldn’t help but feel the irony of unusually warm weather destroying the Global Warming 101 expedition logo ice sculpture.
