Bon Voyage!

The day broke clear and cold this morning over the Steger Homestead. Expedition members and basecamp staff were up well before the sun packing for the first of several departures to the Arctic. A 26-foot purple and orange U-Haul truck sat in the driveway, providing stark contrast to the natural surroundings. Time to pack things up and head north!

Elizabeth, Abby, and Basecamp manager, John Huston, will drive the monster truck, loaded with 8,000 pounds of food and equipment, across the Canadian Border to the Ottawa airport. From there the three will meet up with Will, Jim Paulson, and Jerry Stenger to fly together to Baffin Island and the city of Iqaluit. John Stetson and Nancy Moundalexis will arrive in Iqaluit several days later with all 24 dogs.

img_1296.jpg Getting an expedition of this size with a variety of complex logistics, out the door on time takes a village. Over the course of the past week the Homestead has been graced by a host of dedicated volunteers who donated their time to support the cause. They bagged rice, weighed food, lashed sleds, sized dog harnesses, inventoried gear, baked brownies, told jokes, sang songs, and kept morale high. The Global Warming 101 Expedition Team is grateful for their invaluable contributions.
