"You are what you eat." It sounds cliche, but it's true -- especially in the context of a winter expedition to Baffin Island. Nutrition and calorie intake are very important for staying healthy and energetic on the trail. Keeping warm and exerting oneself in cold weather requires massive amounts of energy. The expedition team and Baffin Island basecamp will eat over 3000 pounds of food. While traveling, the expedition team members will each consume roughly 5000 calories per day. This is about twice the amount of calories most people use in normal daily activity.
In preparation for the expedition, team members have been trying their best to add a few extra pounds to their body weight. It is difficult to maintain one's weight and almost impossible to gain weight during a serious winter expedition.
Planning a food menu and packing food for a 100-day expedition is no small task. Most of the food is organic, dehydrated, ready to eat or only requires boiling. First, we brainstorm possible food menus for a typical day of travel. Then we decide how much of each food to eat during a day. Rations consist of roughly 2.5 pounds of food per person per day. Next we account for each person's food preferences, add some variety, and divide the rations between each section of the expedition. Eventually, we end up with a simple plan and food packing system that will allow for maximum efficiency and nourishment during the expedition.
The expedition diet will include the following foods:
- Breakfast- Organic Granola, Organic Oatmeal, Organic Pancakes, Organic Cream of Wheat, Organic Milk Powder, Organic Brown Sugar, Organic Butter, Organic Coffee
- Lunch and Snacks- Organic Energy Bars, Organic Nuts, Organic Dried Fruit, Organic Chocolate, Sports Drink, Organic Dried Soup
- Dinner- Organic Rice, Organic Pasta, Organic Cheese, Grass-Fed Beef, Organic Dried Sauces, Organic Dried Vegetables, Organic Butter, Organic Bread
